Chapter Nine

Seth has always been a light sleeper, at least since his return to Earth. However, on this night, he plunged into a deep slumber, yet not restful, as the dreams and flashes of images in his mind are frantic, even exhausting. The visions are nonsensical, just crazy clips and bursts, sometimes just colors, other times darkness.

Seth finally awakens with a jolt, sitting straight up in his creaky, hotel cot, his body covered in sweat, breathing heavy, a dull ringing in his ears slowly fading over a matter of minutes. Even more troubling is something else he has never felt before. Pain!

He is left with this weird, throbbing sensation in his head, between his temples and seemingly radiating behind his eyes. This foreign feeling, what is it? Is this what people are referring to when they complain about a headache? It’s a strange feeling, yet somehow, part of it feels familiar. In fact, as the pain slowly begins to dissolve, there is a residual tingling sensation that is gently sliding away. It takes several minutes for the effects to finally subside completely. While for most people that would be great, for a person who has never had a headache, or ailment of any kind, the experience is a bit unsettling. He finally wills himself to his feet and paces back and forth in the windowless room that is only nine-feet-by-nine-feet in size.

Seth has decided that he is going to leave by the end of the week. This region has nothing left to offer to him. Having been a drifter since his escape for the Nations, Seth has no memory of his life prior to awakening on Earth. Seth was found sleeping in a hibernation pod on an automated ship that returned from Omega space where it was programmed to take soil and rock samples to be brought back to Earth. Upon awakening in a lab in the Nations, he had no memory at all, not even a name. However, a bracelet he wore read “Seth” and thus became his name.

Oddly enough, retina identification, which is standard, yielded no results and his identity continued to be a mystery. A molecular scan proved that he is indeed 100-percent human, although some of his medical readings came back abnormal. For instance, his oxygen saturation in his blood reads at more than 200-percent. Considering 96 to 98 is considered normal, that certainly raised some eyebrows. Additionally, his skeleton looks normal at first glance, but a look into his bone density showed that his aren’t porous like most people. In fact, they are so dense that a normal X-ray is unable to penetrate the outer layer. His eyes are also a marvel, allowing him normal vision during regular light, but also help him to see quite well in almost total darkness.

Doctors also discovered that his reflexes are off the charts and his skin heals immediately after being pricked with a pin. Every person in the Nations has a tracker implanted under the skin near the neck.
